The term “Tattoo” originates from the old Dutch phrase “doe den tap toe,” which translates to “turn off the tap.” This phrase was used by Dutch military drummers in the 17th century as a signal for innkeepers to stop serving beer and for soldiers to return to their barracks for the night.
The drummers would march through towns in the Low Countries, playing a rhythmic call to mark the end of the day’s activities. Over time, this practical signal evolved into a more formal military ceremony. As it spread through European armies, particularly the British Army, the Tattoo became an evening tradition featuring music, marching, and ceremonial display.
By the 19th and 20th centuries, the military tattoo had grown into a full-scale public performance showcasing the discipline, pageantry, and musical excellence of military units.
Today, tattoos around the world carry forward this rich tradition—transforming a centuries-old military signal into a global celebration of service, culture, and music.
